Well, this month marks 11 months of us trying to add a new
addition to our little family. We have been pregnant 3 times together, but
sadly, we've never made it passed the 5 week mark. We have tried just about
everything - the vitamins and supplements, the special lubes , feet in the air,
different positions, pineapple after ovulation, special teas, and just
about every other fad out there on the fertility boards.
This month, on top of everything else, we
(I) have decided to give Soy Isoflavones a go. I have done so much reading on
all things fertility related, and I am almost out of bandwagons to jump on, so
here I am on the Soy train, hoping beyond hope that maybe, just maybe something will go right for us this month.
Through all my reading on the topic ( I am
by no means any type of expert - these are just my own deductions here that
I've made through my own reading!), Here is what I know about Soy Iso:
- Soy Iso's are not typically recommended for people that ovulate
regularly, on their own. They can possibly mess up your cycle/ovulation, or
even prevent you from ovulating at all. That being said, I have a text book
cycle. average about 28 days, ovulating on day 14-15, every month. So why
run the risk of messing up a cycle? For me it's simple: there's a 50/50 shot
that it will help or hurt, and I am the kind of person that needs to feel in
control. I need to feel like I am doing everything in my power to get this baby
going on the right track. No risk, no reward. I feel like my odds are better
with this, than winning anything on a lottery ticket, and I would much rather
win the baby lottery, than any other kind of lottery.
-Taking soy on different days will have
different results. You take them at the beginning of your cycle, for 5 days
only. The earlier in your cycle you start taking them, the more eggs you can
potentially produce. The later you take them the more mature your eggs will be.
Typical days to take them are days 1-5,2-6,3-7, 4-8 or 5-9, although it is
recommended to not start them after day 5, as this could actually prevent
ovulation. Dosages vary, anywhere from 80-200 mg.
-It is said that Soy Iso is kind of like "nature's Clomid" which is a fertility drug to help with ovulation.
- The chance of multiples is slightly elevated when taking Soy, also depending when you take it. Personally, I wouldn't mind twins, so I am okay with that.
- From what I have read, there can be side effects, like headache, nausea, hot flashes - none of which have experienced, and today is my last day taking them for this cycle.
-What soy does is trick you body into thinking you are low on estrogen, by blocking the estrogen receptors, so it produces more, (which helps mature and develop the egg(s) ). Then, when you stop taking it, the receptors are no longer blocked, your body realizes it has lots of estrogen, which prompts the production of LH, which signals the body to "pop that egg". I don't know if it'll work for me, I don't know if it's modern day "snake oil", but I'm already in too deep at this point to turn back. I really at this point have nothing to lose, and hopefully, in a couple of weeks, I'll have a happy update to write about
